Dr Adichat Surinkum, Director of the CCOP Technical Secretariat welcomed all the participants to the workshop and Dr Ego Syahrial, Permanent Representative of Indonesia to CCOP and Head of Geological Agency gave the opening address. Dr Shinji Takarada of the Geological Survey of Japan (GSJ), AIST introduced the progress of GSi Project to all the participants and Dr Joel Bandibas of GSJ, AIST presented the status of the GSi system development.

CCOP-KIGAM Unconventional Oil and Gas Project: National Coordinators Meeting & Workshop (UCM6)

The UC Project have already conducted six (6) Meetings with technical sessions /workshops integrated in the Meeting’s agenda.  The 6th National Coordinators Meeting or UCM6, was conducted at the Petro Hotel, Danang City, Vietnam on 16-18 Aug 2016 with 32 participants.

Present at UCM6 were participants from Indonesia, Cambodia, China, Korea, Lao-PDR, Malaysia, Philippines, Papua New Guinea and Vietnam, the host country. The objectives is to have an enhanced understanding on the Guideline Methodology for the assessment of oil and gas shale resources- the assessment parameters, data to use, work flow and best practices. The UC Project will use the EIA/ARI Methodology for World Shale Gas and Shale Oil Resource Assessment (June 2013) as the Guideline Methodology for CCOPUCM6 focused on the completion of shale basin maps of the region and a workshop on mineral quantification analysis.

The 5th International Conference on Earth Science and Climate Change

The 5th International Conference on Earth Science and Climate Change was held at Hotel AVANI Atrium, Bangkok, Thailand during July 25-27, 2016, in collaboration with CCOP. The conference is based on the theme “Stimulating and Analysing the changes of Earth & Climate”, comprised of scientific sessions containing topics on Earth and Geosciences, Marine Sciences, Atmospheric and Space Sciences, Meteorology and Geophysics, Remote Sensing and GIS, Global Warming, Climate Change, its causes, effects and associated hazards among other critically important scientific issues.

Regular Training Course on Groundwater and Environmental Geochemistry, 2016

Within a series of regular training courses provided by KIGAM/ISGeo in collaboration with CCOP for member countries, the KIGAM/ISGeo training course on Groundwater and Environmental Geochemistry was conducted from June 20 to July 8, 2016 in the International School for Geoscience Resources of KIGAM, Daejeon, Korea, with total 25 participants including 14 participants from CCOP Member Countries.  Aiming to foster professionals from all over the world in the fields of groundwater and geochemistry related research as well as to enhance the capabilities of the cooperating countries/organizations with Korea/KIGAM, this 3-weeks training course was planned to provide participants with an introduction to key aspects of groundwater resources and environmental geochemistry. The contents of this course comprise a general overview on evaluation and exploitation of groundwater resources that covered introduction to groundwater resources and practical geochemistry and groundwater contamination and remediation. Also there was a course about numerical groundwater modeling/calibration/uncertainty analysis including case studies and from this year, environmental geochemistry course was inserted as module 3. Total 16 instructors were involved in the course.

CCS-M S6: Workshop on CO2 geological storage and CO2 for EOR

CCS-M S6 was organized on June 07, 2016 - June 09, 2016 in Hanoi, Vietnam, with 30 participants.

The recent COP21, also known as the 2015 Paris Climate Conference resulted in the first agreement requiring all nations to pledge action on climate change with the aim of restricting the global warming to "well below 2° C above pre-industrial levels".  Carbon capture, use and storage (CCS) technologies will have to play an important role to achieve the COP21 targets. In order to fully understand the emission reduction potential, decision makers need to understand the amount of CO2 that can be safely stored in the geological formations and the geographical distributions of storage resources that are available.  The S6 aimed at enhancing the knowledge of the member countries on methodologies in assessing geological storage of CO2, its storage potential and CO2-EOR technologies.

CCOP-KIGAM-UNESCO-MME Workshop on Climate Change and Groundwater Resources in the Mekong River Basin

In collaboration with KIGAM, UNESCO in Bangkok and General Department of Mineral Resources (GDMR) of Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) of Cambodia, the CCOP Technical Secretariat has successfully co-organized the Workshop on Climate Change and Groundwater Resources in the Mekong River Basin on 1-2 June 2016 in Sihanoukville, Cambodia. The objective of the workshop is to promote sharing information and best practices among Mekong countries for assessing availability of groundwater resources under climate change and to support member countries to prepare for sustainable groundwater management plan. There was attendance by 28 participants from 6 Mekong countries & resource persons from Korea (KIGAM, C&H, Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology - GIST, EcoEnergySolution), UNESCO, USGS and CCOPTS.
