Workshop on Tropical Sandy Beach Processes and Morphodynamics under the Thailand-China Marine Cooperation


The Coordinating Committee for Geoscience Programmes in East and Southeast Asia (CCOP) with the Royal Thai Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) and the Third Institute of Oceanography, China (TIO); Island Research Center, China (IRC); and State Oceanic Administration, China (SOA); under the Thailand-China Marine Cooperation, has co-organized a technical workshop on coastal management and geological survey techniques at the Sand Dunes Chaolao Beach Resort, Chanthaburi province, Thailand, 8–20 May 2017. The Workshop programs include 2 days of seminar on “Geological Coastal Management in Eastern Thailand” held 8-9 May 2017 and 15 days of on-boat and on-shore training at the coastal zone in Chanthaburi province, eastern Thailand. There were 168 participants, which include 14 participants from CCOP member countries (10 from China, 2 from Malaysia and 1 from Philippines) and 2 from the CCOPTS.

The seminar (1st day in Thai) was officiated by a welcome address from Mrs. Karnpramepree Chitanont, Vice Governor of Chanthaburi Province. This was followed by special talks on Coastal Change Problems and Solutions by Mr. Niwat Maneekhut, Deputy Director General of DMR, Ms. Somsri Avakeat, Director of Policy and Planning Sub-Division, DMCR, Mr. Surin Sinrat, Rayong Coastal Advisory Committee, Mr. Teerasak Padoongtantrakul, Vice Chairman, Water Institution for Sustainability, the Federation of Thai Industries. Studies on Coastal Change in the Eastern Coast of Thailand for Management Plan were delivered by Mr. Sasin Chalermlarp, Chairman of Seub Nakhasathien Foundation, Mr. Sakda Khundee, DMR, Mr. Apichai Kanchanaphant, DMR. CCOPTS Director, Dr Adichat gives presentation on the topic “Coastal Management in Southeast Asia Countries”.

The 2nd day of the seminar (in English), started with keynote lecture on “Beach Nourishment and Management in Thailand: Status, Challenge and Resilience” by Prof. Dr. Thanawat Charupongsakul, Chulalongkorn University. It was followed by presentations of Dr. Qi Hongshuai, TIO; and DMR Representatives on the Progress of Tropical Sandy Beach Processes and Morphodynamic Study (TBPM) under the Thailand-China Marine Geology Cooperation Project and Its Primary Result. The deliberations continued with Coastal Hydrodynamics in Chanthaburi province, Thailand by Dr. Zhu Jun, TIO Representative; Palaeo-Environment and Evolution in Estuary Based on Diatom – Case Study in Beilun River Estuary by Dr. Chen Min, TIO Representative; and Legislative System of Coastal Management and Comprehensive Planning in China by Dr. Chen Min, TIO Representative.

CCOP participants also presented country reports on Coastal Study and Management in member countries. A discussion session was followed with focus on Coastal Change Technical Studies and future collaboration opportunities among member countries. During the 15-days of the on-shore and on-boat training, a trip to see the coastal land-use in Chantaburi area was also arranged.
