JMG 7-day Advanced Course in Geochemical Analysis

The Malaysia Government through Minerals and Geoscience Department Malaysia (JMG) in collaboration with the CCOP Technical Secretariat conducted the CCOP-JMG Advanced Training in Geochemical Analysis on the topics Base Metal by Inductive OES Couple Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometer (ICP-OES) and Gold by Fire Assay/ Cupellation Techniques at the Roccana Hotel and the Geochemical Laboratory, JMG, Kuantan Pahang, Malaysia from 8 to 15 March 2015. This training program consisted of 2-days of lectures (9 – 10 March 2015) at the Roccana Hotel, 2-day hands on session (11 - 12 March 2015) at JMG Geochemical Laboratory, a visit to Penjom Gold Mine, Kuala Lipis on 13 March and Sightseeing in Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya on 14 March 2015.  The training course was attended by 28 CCOP participants, including 7 resource persons, 7 participants from CCOP Member Countries (Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Philippines, Thailand, Timor-Leste and Vietnam) and 28 local participants.  According to participant feedback, the training program met the needs of all related to the field of laboratory analysis, giving useful practical guidance on how to set up a geochemical lab in their country.  At the end of the course, the participants had a good understanding of the major analytical parameters of the ICP/OES and Fire-Assay/Cupellation techniques. The participants also got the additional benefit of understanding the JMG work place environment through interaction with JMG technical staff.  The course also emphasized basic laboratory procedures which often get overlooked.
