Cooperation Opportunity with IERI, Republic of Korea


Dr. Kyoung-Woong Kim, Director of the International Environmental Research Institute (IERI) and Professor of the School of Earth Sciences and Environmental Engineering, Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST), Republic of Korea, visited the CCOPTS and introduced IERI and GIST. IERI was founded in 2001 with the purpose of establishing a research institute for the United Nations University (UNU) at GIST.  Since then IERI has been contributing to the improvement of the international environment both domestically and overseas, by educating researchers and supporting technologies in developing countries, as well as R&D to cope with climate change through joint activities on international environmental research. The purpose of IERE Director's visit is to figure out possibility of CCOP-IERI cooperation. IERI is interested to collaborate with CCOP on the following:

  • Providing GIST postgraduate scholarships (Masters and PhD, in the title of CCOP-GIST scholarship)
  • Providing GIST postgrad interns to CCOP (1 person, 3 months)
  • Accepting researchers, government officers from CCOP Member Countries as IERI interns (5-10 persons, 3-6 month)
  • Opportunity of GIST-supported Research Project by Young Earth Scientists from CCOP region (2,000 USD per year)

IERI Director expressed intention for IERI under GIST to become a Cooperating Organization of CCOP as early as possible.  CCOPTS informed him the procedure and protocal to become a CCOP Cooperating Organization (CO). Possible timeline for IERI to join CCOP as Cooperating Organization is as follows:

  • Oct. 2019: Inviting CCOPTS to join the International Forum on Climate Adaptation (IFOCA) in Jeju Island (to be decided)
  • Nov. 2019: Joining CCOP 55th Annual Session in Chiang Mai, Thailand and give presentation on possible collaboration with CCOP
  • Mar. 2020: MOU Signing between GIST & CCOP on collaboration: officially join as CO in CCOP
  • Post 2020: First CCOP-GIST scholarship students and internships in GIST
