CCS-M Workshop (C2W1): Malaysia Case Study

The CCOP Technical Secretariat (CCOP TS) in cooperation with the Global CCS Institute, Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) and PETRONAS successfully conducted the CCS-M C2W1 Malaysia case study workshop in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 2-4 June 2015.  The objectives are to have a deeper understanding of the methodologies for the selection of technically accessible CO2 geological storage reservoir and estimation of storage capacity.  The agenda included hands-on exercises to assess and test the CCOP Guideline (Guideline) on the methodologies for selecting CO2 storage sites and estimation of capacities using data from selected the Sarawak basin, the case study area of Malaysia. The invited persons are from Australia (CSIRO and GCCSI), Norway (NPD) and CCOP member countries, notably Malaysia (PETRONAS).

A total of 44 participants actively joined the Workshop-  majority geoscientists from upstream oil and gas regulatory agencies, geological survey/organizations and national oil & gas companies of Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Lao-PDR, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam and Malaysia, the host country.  The number also includes the staff from the CCOP TS.

The presentations from the distinguished resource persons provided updates on the Global Status Storage, The CCS Pilot Project in the Gundih field- Indonesia, Development of CO2 Storage Atlas of Norway, Methodologies for selection geological storage sites, Case studies on CO2 for EOR, and Opportunities and Challenges for CCS deployment in Southeast ASIA.  The CCOP TS also updated the Workshop on the status of UNFC 2009, particularly its application in classifying and reporting of CO2 injection projects.

The Workshops /group sessions on the application of the CCOP Guideline were facilitated by the experts from PETRONAS with assistance from the source persons listed above.  The data set from the Sarawak basin that was prepared by PETRONAS were of excellent quality and fully satisfied the screening parameters of the Guideline.  With the data,  the groups were also able to make  meaningful assessment of the storage sites and estimates of the potential of various storage prospects.  It was also noted that PETRONAS have already published their (own) internal Guideline to facilitate consistency on assessing CO2 storage sites in Malaysian basins.  PETRONAS also is planning to use their Guideline as standard methodology to be used by all companies operating in Malaysia.

With the knowledge learned from the Workshop, particularly on what data to use, the assessment workflow, and the sample cases (case studies), all the participating CCOP countries are encouraged to use the CCOP Guideline to assess their own sedimentary basin for potential of storing CO2.  Any future comments/suggestions related to their assessment works will have to be forwarded to the CCOP TS, as usual, for immediate actions.  A follow up Workshop, C2W2 will be scheduled again in Malaysia in the fourth quarter of 2015.
