CCOP-CGS Second Workshop/Training on Integrated Geophysical and Geochemical Data Processing (IGDP), 22-24 August 2014, Kunming, China

The Second Workshop/Training of the CCOP-CGS Project on Integrated Geophysical and Geochemical Data Processing (IGDP) was held on 22-24 August 2014 in Kunming, China hosted and funded by China Geological Survey (CGS) in cooperation with CCOP.  This activity was co-organized by the Development and Research Center (DRC), CGS and Yunnan Information Center of Geology and Mineral Resources (YICGMR).

There were 45 participants in the workshop/training from CCOP and ASEAN countries (Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam) and other countries (People’s Republic of Korea, Pakistan, Peru and Sri Lanka).

At the Opening Ceremony, Ms Marivic Pulvera Uzarraga, Manager, Programme Operation and Information of CCOP Technical Secretariat (CCOPTS), delivered the welcome address on behalf of the CCOPTS Director, Dr Adichat Surinkum, while Mr Ma Yongzheng, Deputy Permanent Representative of China to CCOP, Division Director, Department of International Cooperation, Science & Technology , Ministry of Land and Resources, officially opened the workshop.  Dr Tan Yongjie, Chief Scientist of the Development and Research Center, CGS graced the Opening Ceremony with his presence.

Country presentations on national geophysical and geochemical works, as well as geological mapping and database activities were made by Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines and Thailand.  Other countries also presented and shared relevant national activities to the meeting.

Dr Zhang Minghua, IGDP Project Leader and Division Director, DRC, CGS introduced the IGDP Project by presenting the general concept of geophysical exploration, its methods and applications, gave an overview of the IGDP software, its general function, geophysical/geochemical/geological databases, and gravity / magnetic / data processing application.  He also briefed the participants on the long-standing cooperation with CCOP and ASEAN in the sector of geoinformation.

Chinese Experts from CGS ran the training session in the use of the IGDP Software, which were provided to all the participants of the training.  Dr Wang Chengxi led the participants in the installation of the software, Dr Qiao JiHua introduced the operation and data management of the software and Dr Yu Hailong presented the 3D Gravity and Magnetic Modeling features of the software using the operational approach.

There were 3 case studies presented by Resource Persons from China, Thailand and Indonesia.  On behalf of Prof Zhao Genxin, Dr Su Yongjun of Tianjin Center, CGS presented on the application of gravity survey with 1:50,000 on concealed iron deposit and geological structure study in East Hebei Province.  Mr Pasakorn Paopongsawan of the Department of Mineral Resources, Thailand presented on the application of geochemical data for environmental monitoring in Rayong Province, Eastern Region, Thailand.   Mr Tony Rahadinata of the Geological Agency of Indonesia, presented on integrated geological, geophysical and geochemical (3G) data for geothermal prospecting at Gn. Talang area, Indonesia.

During the discussion, participants from CCOP and ASEAN Countries expressed their need of a week-long intensive hands-on training on the use of RGIS-IGDP software, together with on-site case studies.

All the participants received a package of the RGIS-IGDP Software as well as certificate of participation at the end of the workshop.  Dr Zhang Minghua officially closed the workshop after thanking all the participants in their active partaking, the CCOP Technical Secretariat for the close collaboration in the organization of the workshop, and the local organizers from his team at DRC/CGS as well as from the YICGMR.
